Q. I’ve had quintuple bypass surgery. Over the last few years, I’ve found it more difficult to breathe, and I have no energy for doing everyday things. As a matter of fact, I’m reluctant to do anything physical because I fear it will produce angina. Is there anything non-invasive that could help me take a walk in the park and reduce my intake of nitroglycerin?

Our range of services includes consultations, ECHO cardiograms, stress testing, ECP (External Counterpulsation), and more!

A. ECP (External Counterpulsation) might be a solution. Clinical studies have shown that this non-invasive treatment can be effective in treating angina. Candidates for ECP include those who have had bypass surgery or stents but still experience angina and shortness of breath. Benefits of ECP include the following:

  • Increases exercise tolerance
  • Eliminates or decreases episodes of angina
  • Decreases the need for heart medication

ECP involves the construction of blood vessels from the feet to the hips in a very precise manner in keeping with the beats of the heart. Basically, the procedure stimulates the formation of small, branch blood vessels called collaterals. The blood vessels then create a bypass around a blocked artery, which can help reduce angina and help a person live a longer, happier life.

ECP is performed over a seven-week period where patients undergo the treatment for one hour a day, five days a week. After 35 hours of consecutive treatment, many patients regain their lives back at no risk. If you suffer from symptoms that suggest blocked arteries and would like to investigate your candidacy for physician-certified ECP treatment, please call Harcharn S. Chann, M.D., an experienced cardiologist. This treatment is approved by Medicare and most insurance plans. For more information, please call Cardiac Care Physicians Medical Group.
